single parent scholarship
Financial support for single parents
Becoming a new parent is one of the biggest changes in your life! Having that little one in your live is magical but also overwhelming at times. They will take up most of your time, which is why lots of parents live day by day. Especially when you are a single parent, it is hard to make everything work. Planning and saving for your future is most likely not on top of your to do list.
Why a single parent scholarship?
As a Dutch company, with our much-appreciated customers/parents base in the US, we want to give back to this community. The Dutch government financially supports single parents in the Netherlands so that studying and childcare can be combined. We have learned that in the US many students rely on available scholarships when their own finances are insufficient. For single parents, time and financial resources are often the cause for not being able to complete their education. As a degree can increase the financial stability, and the chance of a better future, of a whole family significantly we feel this is an important cause to which we want to contribute.
Childcarecanada.org shares the outcome of the study from The Institute for Women’s Policy Research which emphasizes the importance of higher education for single mothers:
“Earning a higher education is increasingly necessary for achieving family economic security. For single mothers, who are more likely to live in poverty than other women, earning post secondary credentials can bring substantial benefits, from increased lifetime earnings and employment rates to better health outcomes and chances of success for their children. However, single mother college students often face obstacles that can complicate their ability to complete their educational programs. Just eight percent earn a degree within six years of enrolling, compared with roughly half of women in college who are not mothers. Greater investments in helping single mothers persist in college and graduate would benefit their families, communities, and society.’’.
